From AFRESH
In order to edit and contribute to AFRESH, you must be a user. In order to become a user and log in to AFRESH, please click on this link and click "Create an account." Remember that you must be logged in to AFRESH in order to contribute.
AFRESH is a tool in which users can learn about and ultimately contribute to the fields of experimental and computational atomic-scale friction. There are a number of ways that you can personally contribute to AFRESH. One of the greatest benefits is that you can provide detailed accounts of your experimental methods which will assist with experimental reproducibility that would not necessarily be available in published articles.
With regards to experimental work, you can provide your standardized methods for calibrating and using equipment, detailed procedural write-ups, movies of key steps being undertaken in the lab, and detailed data sets from model systems. By combining these contributions, every user will help to provide self-consistent data for the tribological dependence of varying materials on many different criteria.
With regards to computational work, you can provide some of the fundamental computer codes which enabled you to achieve the results that you acquired. Since different simulation methods such as thermostat techniques will not be interchangeable for experimental reproducibility, these contributions will provide a necessary understanding of how results can be affected by simulation methods and will answer the question of what is the most ideal method for computational work.
Also, you can make use of the question and answer feature in AFRESH where you can ask other users questions about atomic-scale friction research and where you can help other users by answering their questions.
Concerning questions you may have on how to edit this AFRESH wiki, the first thing you should learn is how to create a new page which is discussed in detail next.
Creating a New Page
*Please note that once you have created a new page, you must link appropriate existing pages to it and term paper vice versa in order for your article to become worthwhile on AFRESH!
There are 2 ways to create a new page:
- 1. The simplest way to create a new page is through the web address.
- After the equal sign in the web address, add the title of the page that you wish to start
- www.nsfafresh.org/wiki/index.php?title=insert_page_title_here
- For example, add "Molecular_Dynamics" to create a page title "Molecular Dynamics"
www.nsfafresh.org/wiki/index.php?title=Molecular_Dynamics
Adding a Link to an Existing Page
- 2. The 2nd way to create a new page is the same as the manner in which you should link to other pages on the AFRESH site.
- If the page you wish to create is closely related to another page, a link is the way to go
- To create link, put the name of the page you want to start between double brackets → insert page title here
- In order to create a page titled "Molecular Dynamics", you would simply add the following:
- To create link, put the name of the page you want to start between double brackets → insert page title here
Molecular Dynamics
- Also, the toolbar for the edit page contains important help options
Separating Sections and Subsections
In order to create a new section within the page you are editing:
- Enclose the title of the section between equal signs
- =New Section=
- The number of equal signs around the title will dictate the font size and level of the title
=New Section=will be a larger font and higher level than
New Section
Within a section, you can use bullets to further organize information:
- Using an asterisk at the beginning of a line will insert a bullet for that line.
- Adding an extra asterisk will further indent the bullet for that line.
- The number of asterisks will determine how far the tab is moved to the right of the screen.
- Adding an extra asterisk will further indent the bullet for that line.
*This is the approach **to get the formatting ***used in the above lines.
Bold and Italic Formatting
- You can utilize Bold formatting by clicking the "B" toolbar button →
- You can also insert Bold type by following this format:
Insert writing here.
- You can utilize Italic formatting by clicking the "I" toolbar button →
- You can also insert Italic type by following this format:
Insert writing here.
Subscript and Superscript Formatting
- You can subscript text by placing around the text you wish to subscript.
H2O
The above format yields the following result → H2O
- You can superscript text by placing around the text you wish to superscript.
X2 + Y3 = Z
The above format yields the following result → X2 + Y3 = Z
Inserting an External Link
You can insert an external link by enclosing the web address and the link title between brackets →
- IMPORTANT
- You must include "http://" before the prefix of the web address in order for the link to work
- Example: The following link → AFRESH, will appear as:
AFRESH
Formatting for a Table
You can insert information into a table by using the following format:
One || Two || Three
A || B || C
The table format shown in the preview area above will look like this:
One | Two | Three |
A | B | C |
In the above table, it can be seen how the placement of the pipe → | ← characters are used to separate the rows and columns within the table. Further, you should note that the use of the exclamation point, !, at the beginning of row one → ! One || Two || Three centers and bolds all of the information within that row. Also using commands such as align="center" allows you to designate how you would like to horizontally align the information within that row. Finally, the style="width:100% command shown above allows you to determine what width of the page you want your table to occupy.
Please note the following information:
- The default horizontal alignment for any information in a table is left aligned. Other alignment options include center, right, and justify.
- The border designation shown in the table displayed above is not required but can be used as a way to distinguish between the rows and columns within your table.

Adding References/Citations in AFRESH
*Please note: We request that all references added to pages within AFRESH be added to the AFRESH Bibliography. Also, each of the references that you add should be internal links to the bibliography entry that you have created. Articles can be added to the AFRESH Bibliography by clicking on the following link: Upload Bibliography Article
Please use the following formatting when referencing/citing your information:
- The link to the AFRESH Bibliography article that you have created should have this format:
- Author(s), Reference Title, Source Title Volume # (Issue #): Page #'s Publication Year
- "Page Title" is the title of the page within AFRESH for the bibliography article that you added.
- Author(s), Reference Title, Source Title Volume # (Issue #): Page #'s Publication Year
- An example of the proper reference format for AFRESH is given below:
Zhao XY, Hamilton M, Sawyer WG, Perry SS, Thermally activated friction, Tribology Letters 27 (1): 113-117 2007
- The above link example will appear like this:
- In order to cite the information that you are referencing, please bracket and numerically mark the citation as an internal link to the article you are referencing → [1]
- The above bracketed should look like the following example:
[[Zhao2007TAF| [1] ]]
- This citation method is illustrated below from the AFRESH page on Granular Lubrication:
The process of chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP), which is a subject of intense interest in electronics manufacturing, involves the flow of a slurry of particles [1, 2, 3] to attain a high degree of planarity on silicon wafers.

Inserting a Picture
The easiest way to insert an image is by clicking on the toolbar button that resembles a portrait →
- The button will give the following format:

- Example.jpg will be the source of the file that you upload to the wiki by clicking on the Upload file link on the left side of the page
Additional picture options include the following:
- Type → declaring the image as either a "thumbnail" or a "frame" will alter the specific formatting for the image
- Location → left, center, and right alignment
- Size → specify the size of the image (in pixels)
- Caption → addition of an image description
- 4.1. Link → addition of internal and external links allows you to specify the original location or source of the image.
The following examples will show some of the ways in which these picture options can be used:
- 1. Type:

- The above options are illustrated below with the first image being "thumb" and the second image being "frame":
- Note that the "thumb" and "frame" options have default right alignment!
- The above options are illustrated below with the first image being "thumb" and the second image being "frame":
- 2. Location:

- The above alignment options are illustrated below.
- 3. Size:
- Note that size specification will not work when you use the "frame" tag!
- The use of the "frame" tag invalidates the option to scale the image.
- Note that the use of the "thumb" tag will only allow the image to be scaled smaller!
- The use of the "thumb" tag invalidates the option to enlarge the image.
- Note that size specification will not work when you use the "frame" tag!

- Specification of only one size dimension will format the size inputted as the width while maintaining the images original aspect ratio.
- For the above example, the image will have a width of 200px, shown below:
- Specification of only one size dimension will format the size inputted as the width while maintaining the images original aspect ratio.

- Specification of both width x height dimension will format the image to maintain the original aspect ratio with either the width or height equal to the maximum specified
- For the above example, since the original image is 180x66px, the image will have a height of 50px, shown below:
- Specification of both width x height dimension will format the image to maintain the original aspect ratio with either the width or height equal to the maximum specified
- 4. Caption:

- Note that you must include either the "frame" or "thumb" tag in order for the caption to appear with the image!
- 4.1. Link:
- Captions for images can also contain internal and external links.
- 1. Internal Links:
- 4.1. Link:

- For the above example, the image caption now contains an internal link to the AFRESH Homepage.
- 2. External Links:
- For the above example, the image caption now contains an external link to the AFRESH Homepage.
Combination of all image options:

- 2. Inserting an Embedded Video File:
- In order to insert an embedded video into an AFRESH article, you first need to upload a media file by clicking on the Upload file link on the left side of the page.
- You should also upload an image that is representative of the video by clicking on the same link.
- The method for inserting the embedded video is shown in this simple format:
<localvideo width="# of pixels" height="# number of pixels" title="Insert name to call video" image="Example.jpg">Example.ogg</localvideo>
- Example.jpg will be the source of the representative image file that you uploaded.
- Example.ogg will be the source of the video file that you uploaded.
- In addition, the embedded video allows you to specify the width and height in number of pixels for the video and image as well as the title that you wish to call the file that you have embedded.
- The following example will illustrate how the embedded file functions in an AFRESH article:
<localvideo width="504" height="478" title="Compression of a Carbon Nanoonion" image="Bos_comp.JPG">Bos_comp.avi</localvideo>
The format shown in the preview area above will look like this:
Inserting a Formula
The Math Quick Start Guide is a summary of some of the most important formula functions with detailed instructions on how to utilize them. However, the math capabilities within a wiki are vast, and there is no way a quick start guide can (or should) list them all. Please see Wikimedia's Formula page for an exhaustive list of codes and outputs. If you have understood the process for coding equations, then all you need is the proper code for any conceivable notation. Here is a list of just a few of the capabilities:
Also, there is an powerful shareware editor designed to integrate with LaTex code. It is called WinEdt, and you can find it here at WinEdt.
Inserting an Email Address
You can insert a protected email address with or without a specified subject line so that people can contact you if desired.
- Note that in html format, %20 is equivalent to a space in the subject line
- Example without subject line:
[mailto:emailaddress@example.com email here]
- Example with subject line:
[mailto:emailaddress@example.com?Subject=Sample%20Subject%20Line email here]
